Malt scotch whiskey is a type of alcoholic beverage produced in Scotland. Whiskey is made in single malt and double malt formulas and is considered one of the oldest forms of hard liquor. For centuries, the basic process for making this type of scotch whiskey has remained virtually unchanged.
The acquisition of barley is the first step in the production of scotch malt whiskey. After drying the grain over peat, the barley is mixed with a specific amount of water. The fermentation process is then started by adding yeast. The whiskey is only distilled in a copper still to achieve its distinct flavor.
Despite the fact that today’s malt scotch barley producers make larger batches than in the past, they still use the same basic formula. Rather than using steel or another metal for distillation equipment, copper containers are still used. Some argue that attempting to make malt scotch whiskey in a different type of still will result in a different type of whiskey, not a true malt scotch.
The fermented liquid is only stored in oak casks after the distillation process is completed. The use of oak containers, like the use of copper containers during the initial stages, is considered essential if the bouquet and flavor of the scotch whiskey are to be perfect. Depending on the brewer’s practices, the whiskey can last anywhere from five to fifty years in the casks. Many brands of malt scotch whiskey, on the other hand, are considered fully mature and bottled around the ten-year mark.
Various types of blended whiskey products can include malt scotch whiskey as an ingredient. Other whiskeys made with multiple grains, such as corn and wheat, are blended with the malt whiskey. The proportion of malt to grain whiskey varies depending on the color and flavor profile desired by the distiller.
True malt scotch whiskey isn’t widely available in every country. That is, however, gradually changing. Whiskey is starting to make its way into North and South America, as well as parts of Asia and Africa, thanks to growing recognition of its superior quality. It is also possible to order malt scotch whiskey online, even if it is not available in local liquor stores, thanks to online shopping. However, due to import restrictions in some countries, it is currently impossible to accept orders from all countries.
